Faster processes, fewer errors: xPick at Schnellecke

Performance, costs and efficiency improved

By using an xPick solution based on "wearable computing", Schnellecke has improved logistics in the areas of performance, costs and efficiency.

At the Wolfsburg plant, Schnellecke produces various modular systems for the Golf, Touran and Tiguan models and delivers these just-in-time / just-in-sequence to Volkswagen. Due to JIT and JIS delivery, the processes are highly dependent on optimized and error-free process steps.

In the past, conventional individual order picking of heavy vehicle components with hand scanners was prone to errors and led to delays within the tightly meshed assembly processes. For this reason, both the speed and quality of the order picking and sequencing processes, for example for the assembly of up to 1,200 Touran and Tiguan moulds per day, had to be improved. The ergonomic factor was also in focus; employees need both hands to handle the often heavy and bulky vehicle components. The optimal IT solution should therefore be hands-free.

Within three months, Schnellecke and its project partner Ubimax implemented a hands-free picking solution xPick with xBand and Google Glass Enterprise Edition for mold ceiling production. With the new solution, several process steps and call-offs are now combined, digitized, automated and bundled into a new type of multi-order picking for final assembly. xPick was also fully integrated into the IT process landscape via a bidirectional interface to Schnellecke's SJS JIT system.

The Glass Enterprise Edition with its intuitive graphical user interface is used in combination with the multi-sensor RFID wristband xBand, which enables hands-free operation along the entire process chain. Confirmation of the picking steps is done with the xBand, which completely eliminates the time-consuming scanning process - a great advantage when around 1,200 vehicle headliners have to be installed daily.

The introduction of hands-free multi-order picking in order picking significantly accelerated the picking process. Process quality has been improved and the error rate reduced to zero. In addition to process speed and error rate, the introduction of hands-free operation has also significantly improved ergonomics. In addition, the introduction time for new employees will be shortened and the deployment of employees will be made more flexible. In times of increasing digitization and automation, such solutions enable employees on the shop floor to concentrate on their original work.

Schnellecke now uses xPick in several other plants, including Glauchau, Leipzig and Silao (Mexico). Order formations in direct view of Smart Glasses or Tablets and immediate order control reduced picking errors to zero and accelerated the overall process by 22 percent.
